Alaska 2000

Multiplying Ministry across The Alaskan Frontier

By Cathy McKay

This year's King's Kids Alaskan adventure was a unique and exciting outreach for us. Twenty diverse outreachers (from all across America) spent three days together in Port Orchard before flying off to Anchorage where we joined together with over sixty others--members of four other church teams and various other kids from all over Alaska, Washington and other parts of the U.S. We spent several days at a welcoming church in Anchorage where we had an intense and joyful time of preparation for ministry. We saw God's plan continue to unfold before us as we prayed and worshipped over the cities and villages in which we would minister. It was a very exciting time of growing in the Lord.

One team, called the North Pole Team (the other half we called the Peninsula Team), spent our first day of outreach in downtown Anchorage. We marched in a well-attended parade in the morning where we were able to proclaim the Name of Jesus over the streets of Anchorage through music and flags. The crowds cheered as the kids passed by, and we believe that God used them to encourage the believers there. In the afternoon, we ministered in two downtown parks where many homeless natives frequent. Many of our hearts were broken as we ministered to people who had lost all hope. We trust that God changed some hearts that day. For much of the team, this was their first experience ministering on the streets and in public--and we learned later that evening in our sharing time just how powerful it was for many of the young people.

The next day we traveled by bus across the state to Gakona, where we joined up with the Peninsula Team. Primitive conditions with swarms of mosquitoes, soaking rain, crowded living-quarters, and no showers brought back vivid memories of foreign outreaches in past years. The teams rose to the challenge and worshipped, prayed, and had wonderful times of ministry in the Native villages in the area for three jammed-packed days. We were again deeply impacted by the missionaries we worked with who are out on the frontiers of our nation ministering to those with no hope.

Four days later, our group climbed on our familiar yellow bus and headed north to Fairbanks and the North Pole. There we ministered in two wonderful churches where God used the team to bring for the words for revival and unity in the Body of Christ. At one church, almost the whole church came forward at the altar call for those wanting a move of God in their lives--and the kids prayed for each of them. It was really an awesome time of God moving in our midst! We spent two days working in the rescue mission and food bank downtown. We learned a lot about serving others and hard work—and even had fun in the process!

The North Pole is a place where millions of children address their letters at Christmas time--thinking they will find answers to life's problems via the presents they might receive from Santa. God showed us to pray with fervency that people would find Jesus—the TRUE answer to ALL their needs. We had a wonderful time of intercession over North Pole and Fairbanks at Mt. Esther (the highest place in the valley). It was a unifying time for our team before we began another phase of ministry.

We then ran a three-day missions camp for several churches in the area to expose kids and families to reaching their neighbors and world for Christ. There were 108 of us all together. Powerful! We taught the new young people several songs, spent lots of time in worship and prayer and studying God's Word. What a sight it was as we invaded downtown Fairbanks on Friday afternoon with a whole new group of kids that had never gone on outreach before. One of our highlights that day was seeing a woman who was ridden with cancer come to know Jesus as her Savior. That one sheep that was found made the whole trip worth it!

After the life-changing camp experience, we once again boarded our bus for a fun-filled (and very long) ride back to Anchorage where we met up with the other half of the team. We all shared in what God had done all over Alaska and had a time of celebration with one another and many parents, families, and friends. We saw God plant a seed in the hearts of many Alaskans to continue His work in that northern land. What a privilege it was to again witness God mobilizing this generation to take the world by storm! It was an honor and pleasure to work with so many committed and excited young people. They will impact the Great Alaskan Frontier for many years to come.
